On Friday April 22 2011, Eugene Oregon Police Officer Chris Kilcullen (a motorcycle officer) was shot during the course of a traffic stop near Oakridge, Oregon. The alleged shooter, Cheryl D. Kidd, of Springfield, OR, was charged captured and charged with murder. Kilcullen was the first EPD officer to be die on duty since 1934 (obviously, Eugene has a very low incidence of violent crime).

On April 29, a mass of police from all over Oregon descended upon Eugene to honor the slain officer. Dark blue ribbons were tied up all over town and flags were flown at half-mast. The flag pictured here was flying above Skinner's Butte. Many roads in town were closed off for the elaborate funeral procession.
